Are You Being Bullied?

Are You Being Bullied?

What can you do?
  • Speak up against bullying. Say something like, "STOP"
  • Walk away. Even though you're upset, act like you don't care!!
  • Tell an adult you trust.
  • Stay with your friends. Staying with a group and having buddies can help.
Remember:
  • It is not your fault. Nobody should be bullied...NO MATTER!
  • You are not alone.
  • Don't bully back.
  • Don't bully anyone else.

Bullying is hurting another person
on purpose!

It includes:
  • Calling someone hurtful names.
  • Spreading lies and bad rumors about someone.
  • Being mean and teasing someone.
  • Hitting, punching, shoving, spitting and physically hurting someone.
  • Not including someone in a group.
  • Getting certain kids or teens to "gang up" on others.
  • Having money or other things taken or damaged.
  • Being threatened or being forced to do things.

Bullying also can happen on-line or electronically. It's called Cyberbullying. That's when kids or teens bully each other using the Internet, mobile phones or other cyber technology.

It includes:
  • Sending mean text, e-mail, or instant messages.
  • Posting nasty pictures or messages about others on blogs, Web sites, through texts and e-mails.
  • Using someone else's user name to spread rumors or lies about someone.
  • Stealing someone's password and spreading rumors about someone else making it seem like that person is the Cyberbully.
  • Sometimes kids who are bullied and cyberbullied have a hard time standing up for themselves.

Are You A Bully?

Think about what you are doing.
  • Making others feel bad is wrong.
  • Would you be hurt if someone bullied you?
  • We are all different and that doesn't make us good or bad.
  • Step out of your comfort zone. Get to know other kids who are different than you are. You just might like them.
  • Talk to an adult you trust.
Be a friend to the person who is being bullied.
  • Talk with them.
  • Sit with them at lunch.
  • Play with them at recess.
  • Set a good example. Don't bully others.
  • Speak up if you feel safe. Tell the bully to STOP!
  • Tell an adult. Sometimes kids who are being bullied are afraid to tell an adult. Stand Up for them and be an UPSTANDER.
  • When you see someone being bullied, what do you do? Cyberbullying happens online by technology such as computers, cell phones and other electronic devices.
It includes:
  • Sending hurtful, rude, or mean text messages to others.
  • Spreading rumors or lies about others by e-mail or on social networks.
  • Creating websites, videos or social media profiles that embarrass, humiliate, or make fun of others.
Cyberbullying is different from person to person bullying because:
  • Messages can be sent every day, all day, all week, all year.
  • Cyberbullying is shared with a wide audience and can be made viral in an instant.
  • Messages are sent anonymously.
Effects of Cyberbullying
Kids who are cyberbullied are more likely to:
  • Have lower self-esteem.
  • Have more health problems.
  • Get bad grades.
  • Skip school or not want to go to school.
  • Experience in-person bullying or victimization.
  • Use alcohol and drugs.
